Shadow Skaggs took the lead to install security cameras in the Carter County Library.  The Grayson Rotary Club purchased the cameras and Shadow installed them.

The Librarians were spending long hours alone in the building with no direct back-up.  These cameras were envisioned as a deterrent to crime and a protection for these women.

Needless to say, this project was greatly appreciated!

This year the Rotary Club of Grayson completed the Bike Project that we began last year.  We received a District Matching Grant to facilitate Bicycle use in Grayson.  The Club met with the Mayor and discussed the City’s Proposal for roads as reported to the State.  As a part of this plan the City included planning for Bike paths crossing the city.  The Grayson Rotary Club expressed our interest in supporting this development.

Dan Click, a member of the Grayson Rotary Club and the Director of our local Art Gallery, organized several bike-related activities throughout the year.  Over two dozen bikes were obtained as a part of this aspect of the project and many were given to local children.  Bike Safety programs were provided to the community in conjunction with the Art Gallery activities as well as our Fall Funtoberfest.

One special event occurred during this year related to bikes.  One handicapped gentleman expressed an interest in riding, but noted that due to his medical problems, was unable to ride a standard bike.  As a result, the Rotary Club of Grayson purchased this man an recumbent bicycle that he was able to use!

Bicycle riding is seen as good exercise, improving one’s health.  Adequate Bicycle paths are also seen as helpful to the poor commuting to work, etc.  Support for Bicycles and riding as  a sport is expected to prove helpful in the city’s efforts to enlarge tourism in our area.

As a part of this grant the Grayson Rotary Club contracted with the Carter County Career and Vocational Center, our school district’s vocational school, to produce bike racks.  The Drafting Program produced designs for several different bike racks.  The Welding Program constructed the bike racks.  The Construction Program painted the bike racks.  Not only has the Grayson Rotary Club helped the bicyclists in the City, but has supported our local students in advancing their career goals!

Donation:  Honor Flight

Honor Flight Kentucky takes Veterans from our state to Washington, DC to visit the war memorials there.  We are pleased to support their efforts.

Senior Salute

One again the Rotary Club of Grayson honored the top graduates from East Carter High School.  After interviewing lots of potential honorees, the top 16 graduates were chosen.  They were provided with professional photo layouts and the resulting pictures posted on large display boards that circulated throughout our community.  They were honored by a buffet during which each honored graduate announced and publicly thanked their favorite or most influential teacher.  A fitting close to another fine school year.

Parent of the Year Awards

Again, the Rotary Club of Grayson hosted the Parent of the Year Awards.  Working with Becky Walker, a Rotarian and Director of the Family Resource Center in Grayson, children in Kindergarten and 1st Grade, 2nd and 3rd Grade, as well as 4th and 5th Grades were recruited by their teachers to write essays on 'Why my mommy/daddy should be the Parent of the Year'.  Each school selected a winner for father and for mother in each of the three grade categories.  The Grayson Rotary Club then chose the overall winners for each of the categories across the different schools participating.  The Club meeting when these winners were selected has come to be recognized as a high point for each Rotary year.  The winning parents were recognized during a ceremony in the Carter County Library.  Each student received a medallion and the winner in each category received an extra-large medallion and a gift card.  The parents and their children were photographed and the images run in the local newspaper.

This year we held the Pancake Breakfast at Prichard Elementary School.  I expect continuing experiments and improvements will continue.

Ad Purchased

A new business has opened in Grayson, an online portal for local news and information, the Carter County Post.  The Rotary Club of Grayson wished to support this new endeavor and purchased it’s first ad!  Good Luck, Tim!

Carol Adams is the Director of CASA, The Court Appointed Special Advocate Program.  She spoke with us about child abuse and neglect in Carter County and inspired us to become involved in helping these children.

The Rotary Club of Grayson assumed responsibility for FuntoberFest from the Chamber of Commerce this year.  This major, community-wide Fall activity brings together the efforts of dozens of groups to provide clean and safe fun for all.  We especially appreciate the Sponsors of FuntoberFest, as their support made it all possible.
